Improving Patient Public Involvement Within Funded Research

The Hero

The National Institute for Health Research.

The Challenge

The NIHR funds millions of pounds worth of research each year. A crucial part of that work involves patient and public involvement. But, not every researcher knows how to do it well, and how to write it into their funding bids.

The NIHR team for Yorkshire and Humber wanted an easy way to break down what PPI is, and how researchers could integrate it into their work. They reached out to Nifty for help.

The Solution

We met with the NIHR team and quickly realised there was SO MUCH information that we could throw at researchers. So, we broke it down into the research journey - what could researchers do with PPI members at application, recruitment, data collection and dissemination stage? We then created a suite of animations - co-creating the script and voiceovers with public contributors themselves - to demystify how to work with members of the public within research projects.

The Result

The animations are now live on the NIHR website as part of their PPI toolkit and resources to support researchers with their funding applications.

Thanks so much for all your help, the team have really enjoyed working with the Nifty team and think all of your work is amazing!
